According to a Swedish TV news broadcast of August 20th, 19999, it is now believed that the wreck of Soviet Submarine first identified as the S-4 is that of the Soviet submarine S-8. The S-8 was first reported lost on October 21, 1941, when it hit a mine near Hogland in the Gulf of Finland.
The S-4 was lost by D/C from German M 801 on February 23 1945 at a location SW off Liepaja.
The German vessel "MS Göttingen" was sunk the same day W Liepaja was. One source (Lars Ulfving) claims that Göttingen was torpedoed by S-4 under command of Capt Kljusjkin. Another source, Jürgen Rohwer claims the Göttingen was sunk by SC 309 then under the command of Capt Vetchinkin 1945-02-23 at 04.35 LMT at position 56 degree 18N/20 degree 16.
However, the MS Göttingen was lost off the Baltic coast near West Liepaja - not at all near the coast of Öland. But sunk by whom? Time of sinking was so early on February 23rd that both the S-4 and SC 309 could have made the distance to Öland ( and be at the position of the wreck site) that same day.
The wreck circumstances indicate it has been hit by D/C near the bottom after the U-boat had attacked a surface vessel. But no reports could be found so far from German or Swedish Archives indicating Naval activities that day in the area. Nor are there any war reports of sunken Submarines in that particular area
